BESOM NEWS
Besom has enjoyed an influx of time givers during the last 4 months. Four young women on a Transit programme giving a year out to study the Bible, who serve the church and the community, have given time on projects and other work on Tuesdays. Three young men have also embarked on a year out to drive the van, work on projects and build furniture. Two other people have now become regular time givers who have brought enthusiasm and fresh ideas.
Tilbury Project
This project was in Tilbury. We redecorated a lounge and hallway for a single mother with 7 children, 5 still living at home. The work involved stripping and replacing the wallpaper, plastering and filling in cracks, sanding down and painting the woodwork and radiators. But the project wasn’t just about practical help. We spent a lot of time with one of the children, a 15 year old boy. As Tuesdays are his day out of school he often helped us do the decorating. Throughout the course of the project we were able to get to know him a little better each week and hopefully be a positive influence on his life. The time we spent on the project was also a learning experience for us as a team. It opened our eyes to see the reality of what life is like for this family, and so many other families in our community, and it inspired us to continue to reach out with God's love to those around us.
Boiler Room Project
Besom recently provided a project for the 24/7 Boiler Room Community in Stanford le Hope, which was to decorate a lounge for a single young woman who had been re-housed after being homeless. They raised the funds for this project by running a soup week where people gave donations for their soup. They were able to pay for the paint & materials, plus provide her with some soft furnishings and small items of furniture for her flat. They had great fun doing this project and the satisfaction from improving the quality of someone’s life in just a weekend.
