BESOM

The Besom in Thurrock helps people to make a difference. It provides a bridge between those who want to give money, time, skills or things and those who are in need.  It ensures what is given is used effectively and the service it provides is free.

National Besom was founded by James Odgers in 1987 and has since spread through the UK and now Europe, South Africa and South America.  Besom in Thurrock currently operates from the Thurrock Christian Fellowship, Corringham Centre but is autonomous and for Christians of all denominations and backgrounds.  Most of the work in Thurrock is presently carried out  every Tuesday when collections and deliveries of furniture, clothing and household items take place.  Thurrock Besom also looks to provide decorating and gardening services where time givers are available.

We apply a very simple principle.  People in need do not have a choice and should not therefore receive anything but the best quality items or service that can be given.  Our question would therefore be 'would you like to receive the things that you are giving?' Besom itself does not need anything, but gives you the opportunity to express the greatest gift - love.

Below is one of the projects Besom helped with. Michelle (pictured below) writes:

'My daughter and I were evicted from our privately rented home, moved into a hostel until we were re-housed by the council. We had to put a home together and Besom in Thurrock kindly provided us with a wardrobe, of which I was very grateful.'

Below are some photos of Besom time givers working on a project for a single mum with 5 children.
